Background

The telecommunications market was beginning to collapse. A $2 billion telecom provider was faced with a balance sheet crisis. The company’s upper management team met on a Wednesday and decided to undertake a massive reduction in force (RIF). More than 2,000 employees would be laid off on Friday — just two days later.

Problem

A significant number of corporate assets were held by field personnel who were to be laid off. Yet the company had minimal staff members available to recover, evaluate and catalog the large volume of IT equipment. This placed the RIF execution schedule in jeopardy.

Solution

The company called on Paladin to supplement its field asset recovery team at 32 sites in North America. In a single day, more than 35 Paladin consultants:

• recovered field IT assets of all RIF-affected employees
• tested the equipment
• shipped it to a central location
• provided support for the company’s IT organization, which had lost employees during the RIF

Result

Paladin completed the recovery, evaluation, inventory and collation of the company’s field IT assets at a central location in 24 hours. This enabled the company’s upper management team to achieve their goal of a fully executed RIF within 72 hours.
