Recap of Activities:
Ms Susan Sevier Computer Science Teacher at BBCTA planned to host an all day career fair for her students on February 20, 2009. Jay Reed, in his role as Education Committee MISD lead, presented the need for volunteer speakers to our Education Committee. In answer to Jay's appeal, Enoch Timothy volunteered to represent SIM by attending and speaking at the event.
Enoch gave the following report to the full DFW SIM Education Committee after speaking at the Mansfield BBCTA event:
Speaking as a guest in Ms Sevier's career day event was a very rewarding and exciting experience for me. I commend her on the thorough job of putting this terrific program together and caring it off to perfection. I worked the event all day partnered with the UT Computer Science Road Show team. The UT team included two Computer Science students from the Austin campus Katie and Daniel along with two robot dogs. The UT team and I divided up each session. The sessions ran for an hour and a half each. UT was on for half the session and then I spoke the other half of the time. We addressed four student sessions throughout the day; all together we were able to interact with more than 200 students.
I was encouraged by the behavior of these students. They were bright, well mannered, attentive, able to ask good questions, and showed a keen interest in the information being presented throughout the day. It was a pleasure to discuss opportunities offered by the IT industry to those capable, determined people who are willing to persevere, prepare themselves and work hard.
The Ben Barber Career Tech Academy is a beautiful facility, approximately two years old which serves several High Schools in the Mansfield school district. This center is equipped with high technology equipment and its faculty and staff members are specially trained to teach a variety of high technology courses. Dr. Ed Foster MISD director of Career and Technical Education leads this advanced facility. Dr. Foster (better know in the halls of BBCTA as "Boss") is an active member of our DFW SIM Education Committee.
The BBCTA treated their guest speakers to a delicious lunch prepared by the culinary arts technology students. We were served in a private dining room situated within the BBCTA facility and equipped like a nice restaurant. This was a surprise treat for me and it was complimentary.
I am confident this event will influence several very talented young people to pursue successful careers in IT making significant contributions to our communities, state and nation who would not otherwise have done so.
This was personally a great experience for me and I place great value on the outcome. I recommend that you consider participating in this type of event as opportunities arise.
